September 2026
Your car smells fine when you leave in the morning. Then it sits outside for a few hours, you open the door and suddenly there’s a stale, sour or musty smell you didn’t notice before.
This is common in San Diego, especially with vehicles that spend much of the day parked outside.
Heat usually isn’t creating the odor by itself. It is making an existing odor source inside the vehicle much easier to notice. Old spills, moisture, pet residue, dirty upholstery and other contaminants can all become stronger once the interior heats up.
Michael sees this regularly when detailing vehicles across San Diego. Finding the source is the important part because spraying air freshener into the cabin won’t solve a problem hiding underneath a seat or deep in the carpet.

Why Car Odors Get Stronger in Hot Weather
A parked car can become considerably hotter than the outside temperature, especially when it sits in direct sunlight with the windows closed.
As the seats, carpets, floor mats and other interior materials heat up, existing odors can become stronger. At the same time, the closed cabin has very little fresh-air circulation.
That’s why an interior may seem fine early in the day but smell completely different after several hours in the sun.
If this keeps happening, pay attention to what the odor smells like, when you first notice it and where it seems strongest. Those clues can help narrow down the source.
6 Common Reasons Your Car Smells Bad When It Gets Hot
1. Old Food and Drink Spills
You don’t need a large visible stain to create an odor.
Coffee, milk, soda and other drinks can run between seats, underneath floor mats or into carpet padding. The surface may look clean after you wipe it, while some of the spill remains underneath.
Food can cause similar problems. Small pieces can end up under seats, around seat rails or in areas you rarely see during normal cleaning.
Once the cabin heats up, these old spills and food residues can become much easier to smell.
2. Moisture in Carpet or Floor Mats
A musty smell that gets stronger in a hot car often points to moisture somewhere inside.
Wet shoes, beach gear, damp towels, leaking water bottles and spills can introduce moisture into carpet and upholstery. If it reaches the padding underneath, the top layer may eventually feel dry while moisture remains deeper in the material.
This is particularly worth checking if the odor started after a beach trip, heavy rain, interior spill or leaving something wet in the vehicle.
If the car consistently smells damp or musty, the source needs to be identified. Cleaning the visible carpet alone may not solve it.
3. Pet Odor
Dog hair is easy to see. The odor associated with regularly transporting pets can be harder to locate.
Hair, dander, body oils and moisture can accumulate in seat fabric, carpet, trunk liners and the spaces between seats. Wet dogs can make the problem considerably worse.
SUVs and crossovers often develop the strongest pet odor in the cargo area because that’s where dogs ride most frequently.
The smell may seem mild when the vehicle is cool and become much stronger after the interior has been sitting in the sun.
4. Dirty Seats, Carpet and Interior Surfaces
Sometimes there isn’t one obvious spill causing the problem.
Years of normal use leave body oils, sweat, food residue, dust and other contaminants throughout the cabin. Seats and carpets gradually absorb that buildup.
Cupholders, armrests and areas around the center console can also hold residue that isn’t obvious until you inspect them closely.
A vehicle can look reasonably clean and still have enough buildup in the interior to produce a stale smell when temperatures rise.
This is one reason interior car detailing goes deeper than vacuuming and wiping visible surfaces. Steam cleaning, extraction and cleaning tight areas can address buildup that regular maintenance leaves behind.
5. The Smell Is Coming From the A/C System
Pay attention to when you first notice the odor.
If you open the door and the car already smells, the source is probably somewhere in the cabin.
If the interior smells normal until you turn on the fan or air conditioning, the HVAC system may be involved.
A dirty cabin air filter, moisture around the evaporator or contamination inside the ventilation system can produce a musty odor when air begins moving through the vents.
This distinction matters because deep-cleaning the seats and carpets won’t necessarily solve an HVAC problem.
If the smell appears primarily when the A/C runs, the ventilation system should be inspected instead of assuming the upholstery is responsible.
6. Smoke Residue From a Previous Owner
Heat can also make old tobacco odor much easier to notice.
This comes up frequently with used vehicles. A car may have been cleaned and heavily deodorized before it was sold, making the interior smell fine during a test drive. After the fragrance fades and the vehicle spends time in the sun, the underlying smoke odor becomes noticeable again.
Cigarette residue can settle into seats, carpet, headliners, vents and other interior materials, so this problem requires a different approach from an ordinary stale interior.
If you recognize the smell as tobacco, see our separate guide on getting cigarette smell out of leather car seats for a closer look at how smoke odor behaves and how it is treated.
Where Is the Smell Actually Hiding?
One of the first things Michael does with a problem interior is look beyond the areas that are easy to see.
The source may be somewhere you haven’t cleaned in years.
Common hiding places include:
- Under floor mats
- Carpet padding
- Beneath the seats
- Between seat cushions
- Around seat rails
- Cupholders and console gaps
- Under child seats
- Trunk and cargo-area carpet
- Seat seams
- Headliner
- HVAC vents
A forgotten spill under a floor mat can be enough to make an entire cabin smell once the car heats up.
The same applies to vehicles used for beach trips. Damp towels, wetsuits and beach gear may be removed at the end of the day, but moisture and residue left behind can remain in carpet or cargo liners.
This is why finding the source matters before deciding how to treat the odor.
Why Used Cars Sometimes Start Smelling Weeks After You Buy Them
This is another situation Michael sees with recently purchased vehicles.
The interior smells clean at the dealership. A few weeks later, something starts coming back.
Sometimes the vehicle was genuinely cleaned but deeper contamination wasn’t addressed. In other cases, strong fragrances or deodorizing products temporarily covered an existing odor.
Once those products fade, the original smell becomes noticeable again. Hot weather can make the change even more obvious.
Pet odor, smoke, old food spills and moisture can all survive a quick dealership cleanup.

Why Air Fresheners Usually Don’t Solve the Problem
Air fresheners have their place if you simply like having fragrance inside the car. They aren’t a substitute for removing an odor source.
If old milk is sitting in carpet padding, adding fragrance doesn’t remove the spill. If pet residue is embedded in a cargo liner, hanging an air freshener from the mirror doesn’t remove that either.
In some cases, combining fragrance with an existing odor makes the cabin even less pleasant.
If the smell keeps returning after the fragrance fades, something inside the vehicle probably still needs attention.
When Interior Detailing Can Help
If the odor is coming from dirty upholstery, spills, pet residue or contaminated carpet, professional interior detailing can address areas that basic cleaning often misses.
Depending on the condition of the vehicle, that may involve:
- Deep vacuuming
- Steam cleaning
- Carpet and upholstery extraction
- Cleaning underneath and between seats
- Cleaning seat seams and tight areas
- Leather and vinyl cleaning
- Pet hair and residue removal
- Cleaning vents and interior surfaces
The specific process depends on where the smell is coming from.
For persistent odors, deeper car odor removal may also be appropriate. Pristine Auto Detail uses professional ozone treatment when needed after the interior has been properly cleaned.
Ozone shouldn’t be treated as a substitute for cleaning. If there is a contaminated spill or other physical source inside the vehicle, that source needs to be addressed first.
Why This Happens So Often in San Diego
San Diego vehicles spend a lot of time in conditions that contribute to interior odors.
Cars parked outside in Carlsbad, Encinitas, Del Mar and other coastal communities can sit in strong sun for hours. Beach trips add sand, damp towels, wetsuits and moisture. Dogs often ride along, especially in SUVs and crossovers.
Then the windows go up and everything sits inside a closed cabin.
Over time, small amounts of moisture, pet residue, spills and everyday interior buildup can become a noticeable odor problem.
The first hot afternoon when you notice the smell may simply be the first time the existing problem became obvious.
Does Your Car Smell Bad Only When It Gets Hot?
If the odor keeps returning every time your vehicle sits in the sun, don’t keep covering it with stronger fragrances.
Try to identify when the smell appears and where it seems strongest. If it is already present when you open the door, the source may be somewhere in the seats, carpet, cargo area or another part of the cabin. If it appears when the A/C starts, the ventilation system may need attention.
If you’re unsure, send Michael a few photos of your interior and describe the smell and when you notice it. He can recommend whether interior detailing, odor treatment or another solution makes sense.
